October's cake

£48 for the 26 cm · from £38

Four layers of vanilla sponge, raspberry jam from August, and the crooked buttercream that started all of this. It is the birthday cake three generations of Fiddlewick have had in front of them.

Whatisactuallyinthebox

Four things, every time, whether you collect it or Crumb rides out with it.

The cake, on a board

Iced the morning of your day, on a 3 mm silver board cut to size so you can lift it without touching the sponge.

A rigid box and a ribbon

Tall enough that nothing touches the lid. The ribbon is structural, not decoration — pull it and the whole thing opens flat.

A card from Dot

With the ingredients on the back in her writing, the date it was baked, and how long it will keep in a cold room.

Six candles, unlit

Plain cream ones in a paper sleeve, plus a box of matches that has been in the drawer since 2019 and still works.

Made on the morning

The sponge goes in at twenty past five and comes out at ten to six. It cools on the rack by the window while Nan Peg does the buttercream by hand, because the machine makes it too smooth and she has views about that.

The jam is plum, boiled in August in the same pan her mother used, and there is exactly enough of it to last until the following August. When it runs out in late July we use raspberry and say so.

“If it comes out level I have done something wrong.”

What does it cost to get it to me, and when?

Collection from 7 Pennygate is free and you can come any time we are open. Delivery is £4 anywhere inside five miles of Fiddlewick, Tuesday to Saturday between 9am and 1pm, with a two-hour window Dot rings through the evening before.

How long do I have to give you?

Two full days. Order by Thursday evening and it is on the counter Saturday morning. If you want candles spelling something, give us three — Dot has to cut the letters.

What happens if it turns up wrong?

Ring the shop the same day. We will remake it for the next morning or refund the whole thing, including the £4, whichever you would rather. Nothing comes back to us and nobody asks you for a photograph.

Will it actually feed my lot?

The 18 cm cuts into 8 to 10, the 22 cm into 16 to 18, and the 26 cm into 24 to 28. Those are real slices, not the mean ones. If you are hovering between two sizes, take the larger one and have it for breakfast.

What is in it, and can you do it gluten-free?

Wheat flour, butter, free-range eggs, caster sugar, vanilla, double cream and the plum jam Nan Peg boils in August. It is made in a kitchen that also handles nuts. A gluten-free sponge is possible with four days' notice and costs the same.
