Ordering, asking, complaining

Tellusthedayandthenumber

“Nobody here reads email before four o'clock. If it is for this week, ring.”

Dot, who does the book, the van and all of the talking

Startanorder

Fill this in and Dot writes it in the book. Nothing is charged here and nothing is confirmed until she has rung you back.

Whatever should go on the masking tape on the box.

The one we will actually use. Dot rings, she does not type.

For the written confirmation, which arrives after four.

Pick the nearest thing. We can change it when she rings.

Two days' notice for a big cake, three for piped writing.

Round up. Nobody has ever complained about leftover cake.

Delivery windows are two hours, Tuesday to Saturday, nine till one.

Allergies, writing on the top, gravel paths, dogs. All of it is useful.

What happens after you press that

  1. 1Dot copies it into the book, in pencil, same day.
  2. 2She rings you between four and five to agree the cake and the size.
  3. 3Half up front for anything over £40, the rest on the day.
  4. 4Change or cancel free up to forty-eight hours before.

“Pencil, because people change their minds, and I would rather rub it out than argue about it.”

If it is for this week

Do not fill the form in — ring 01639 55 2041 instead. There is nearly always a spare sponge in the back and Nan Peg would rather you had it than nobody did. She will also tell you, at some length, what you should be having instead.

The shop

7 Pennygate, Fiddlewick. Blue door, scalloped awning, between the launderette and the bus stop.

The telephone

01639 55 2041, Tuesday to Saturday, 7am to 4pm. It rings in the back, so give it a while.

Email

dot@wobblywhisk.example — read once a day, after the last tray is out.

Pennygate runs off the Green, behind the war memorial. The 44 stops directly outside and there is a bike rack bolted to the drainpipe, which the council has never mentioned.

Askedatthecountermostweeks

What will delivery cost me and when will it come?

£4 inside five miles of Fiddlewick, £9 for five to twelve miles on a Saturday. The van is out Tuesday to Saturday, nine till one, and Dot gives you a two-hour window by telephone the evening before.

How much notice do you need?

Two days for any big cake, three for the Rose Cake or for piped writing. Buns need none — walk in. If it is urgent, ring rather than filling this in; there is often a spare sponge.

What if it is not right?

Tell us the same day and choose: remade for the next morning, or refunded in full including the delivery. We do not want it back and we will not ask you to photograph it.

Which size for how many people?

18 cm feeds 8 to 10, 22 cm feeds 16 to 18, 26 cm feeds 24 to 28. The Burnt Honey Stack is the same again. Between two sizes, take the bigger one.

Do you take a deposit?

Not until we have agreed what the cake actually is. After that it is half up front for anything over £40, paid in the shop or over the telephone, and the rest when you collect.

Stillnotsurewhatyouwant

Come in on a Tuesday morning when it is quiet, point at things, and Nan Peg will tell you which one is right. She is almost always correct and never tactful.
